Dear Hokushin Shinoh Ryu Iaido Member,
Welcome to the Winter 2006 issue of the newsletter.

Annual Grading

It has come to our attention that there was some confusion over the fees for the 2006 grading. For future reference, to be eligible to grade there are two fees you need to have paid – the annual membership fee, and the grading fee.  Then to receive your grade and certificate you also need to pay a certificate fee, which goes to the head dojo in Japan.  If you haven’t paid all three of these, you won’t receive your grade (Japanese certificate).

Shihan’s Travels

Shihan is currently in Japan visiting Grandmaster Kimura and his family; he will bring all the news about Grand Master as well as he is making contacts and other arrangements for our year 2007 Japan trip. He is due to return home in mid July.

New Sign

We have a fantastic new a-frame sign which is the combined work of several students.  We would like to thank Anthony Hudson, Damion Gavan, Josh Burton and Lee Rankin for their time and effort.

Hokushin Patches

Hokushin patches are still available for sale. Ask Shihan or Kristy if you are interested ($10)

Iaido Music

CDs of the music which plays through class are available from Shihan.  A donation of less than $5 is appreciated to cover the costs of materials.

Training Requirements

Please ensure you have paid your Membership fees and signed Shihan’s personal insurance form as both are required in order to train.  If you haven’t done so, please see Shihan or Kristy immediately.

Japan Trip 2007

There are a limited number of seats available for the trip to Japan in 2007.  Please make sure if you are planning on going you pay a deposit of $50 to Kristy to save a place.  There is a travel account available for your use, and we recommend using it to save.  Any money placed in the account is 100% refundable up until the booking fees are made.

Shihan recommends at least $3,000 per member is put aside for the trip, plus additional funds for personal spending.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Shane Lehmann, whose 6 pound 11 baby girl Kelli was born on the 28th May.

Dojo Etiquette

Bow towards the mon on entry to and exit from the dojo
Remove your shoes upon entry and place them just inside the door
Never cut towards another student
Lower your blade if someone is walking past, don’t point your blade at another student
Never walk behind a student who is cutting.  Walk down the centre of the dojo when students are training.
When you pass a sword to another student, ensure the blade is facing towards you.  As you receive a blade from another student, turn the sword so the blade faces you.
When you place your sword on the floor of the dojo, face the blade away from the mon.
Do not strike another students saya when passing them.
