MUSO JIKIDEN EISHINRYU IAIJUTSU

Grand Master: Sekiguchi Takaaki

Tokyo, Japan.

History

The founder of Muso Jikiden Eishinryu was Hayashizaki Jinsuke Minamoto Shigenobu of the Eiroku Era (1558-1569). To avenge the assasination of his father, Hayashizaki Jinsuke prayed to Hayashizaki Myojin and received inspiration about the art of the sword. He called this school Hayashizaki Musoryu and with it he avenged his father. This school has also been known under the name of Shigenoburyu. The seventh Grand Master Hasegawa Chikaranosuke Eishin, contributed additional techniques to the traditional art and refined it to the point of excellence, thereafter it was called Hasegawa Eishinryu or Muso Jikiden Eishinryu. In 1675, Hayashi Rokudayu, the ninth Master took the art to Tosa when in service to the Lord of Tosa. The art flourished in Tosa and was protected by the province as it was regarded as an art form to be preserved. The first of the Masters to promote the school outside the province of Tosa was Master Oe Masamichi Sanetaka, he was concerned about the arts decline in Tosa and so sought to spread it throughout Japan. Each of Master Oe Masamichi Sanetaka's successors have played a part in the continued spread of the school in Japan. The eighteenth Master, Yamanouchi Toyotaka (a descendant of the Tosa Lord) published a work called the "Detailed Theory of Iai" and Master Kono Kanemitsu who founded the Meibukan in Toshima Ku (Tokyo), down to the present Master, Sekiguchi Takaaki.
