2003 Shihan Goho has been establishing new Hokushin branches in Korea. Our Grand Master Kimura has recovered from an illness although he is not as active as previously. Shihan visited him last Spring and they had a very good time together. As Iaido transcends the physical realm, there was still much to learn and it was an enriching experience for him. Shihan Goho was honoured to receive his 9th Dan because of his contributions to Iaido and the fact that he had turned 70 years of age. Shihan said that it feels like it was only yesterday when he started Hokushin Shinoh Ryu Iaido and that time goes very fast indeed. Now back in Adelaide, he is determined to convey his knowledge to others, who have had less of an opportunity to learn traditional Iaido.
November 2001 Shihan Goho Wonho Chong has recently returned from Korea where he held numerous training sessions and seminars along with initiating 6 new training bases for Hokushin Shinoh Ryu Iaido in Korea. Hokushin Shinoh Ryu Iaido was well received having its origins derivative of Hokushin Itto Ryu and being closer to real combat than many other styles.
Various other Shihans from Korea have been training under Shihan Goho Wonho Chong and new training bases in Korea may include Seoul, Chung Ju, Kyungi provence and Pusan.
Shihan will also be hosting regular seminars in 2002 including Perth, New Zealand, Korea and Florida. You can email if you are interested in attending one.
A new Korean web site has been set up for Hokushin Shinoh Ryu Iaido and can be accessed by clicking here or on the picture below. Shihan Goho Wonho Chong will soon be offering specially hand crafted Tsubas for sale and those of you who will be interested should email him. September 2001 A demonstration of Hokushin Shinoh Ryu was conducted for the students of Unley high school last month during a multicultural exchange demonstration. Shihan Goho Wonho Chong will be holding a seminar in Korea next month while initiating a new branch for Hokushin Shinoh Ryu Iaido in Korea. Another branch of Hokushin Shinoh Ryu is now underway in Brooksville, Florida. There is an interview with Ian McDonald from the US on the interviews page, who trained with Shihan and at the Honbu dojo during this month. A demonstration will be conducted on the 30th of this month during the moon festival celebration for the Taiwan society. July 2001
The news section is now to be regularly updated. There has recently been
customary bamboo cutting at the Honbu training hall along with a shipment
of Japanese training swords from Seto in Seki city and various student
gradings. The 3rd Chung
Ju World Martial Arts Festival Hokushin Shinoh Ryu Oh-Go Kai were honoured to be invited to participate at the 3rd Chungju World Martial Arts Festival in the Republic of Korea in September/October 2000. A delegation of five including Shihan Go-ho, Takeo Chong and Philip Hoadley (Honbu dojo), Philip Penn and Alex Cruikshank (W.A. dojo), were accompanied by the Tal Kin Jeri Indigenous Australian dance troupe. The party arrived in Seoul on the 26th of September and were soon on our way to our accomodation in Suanbo, a tourist resort famous for its Hot Springs. Other participating teams came from locations as diverse as Uzbekistan, Sudan, Brunei, Japan, Russia, Vietnam, Mongolia and Greece to name a few. Some of the arts demonstrated were just as diverse, everything from Sambo and Muay Thai to Gatka and Shanghai Wushu.
Day one of the festival consisted of a grand Opening Ceremony which saw the various teams from around the world parade under their respective banners before Government Officials, Spectators and Media. Some demonstrations were held after the opening ceremony in the Chungju City Gymnasium including the New Zealand 'Haka' team and the Japanese 'Iai-do' team. Hokushin Shinoh Ryo performed a total of three times, twice on the outside stage at the main venue at Chungju City and once at the Angseong Venue. On all three occasions we were well received by the viewing public and as with the other delegates had our fair share of autograph signing. Our demonstration consisted of opening and closing formalities (Shin Zen Ni-Rei, To-Rei) five solo performances of various Waza and three special 'combined pair' Waza by Takeo Chong and Philip Hoadley. On the final day the Closing ceremony was held, a special presentation and Reception was hosted for all participating teams.
Hokushin Shinoh Ryu and Tal Kin Jeri delegations received beautifully engraved black stone plaques and individual members received a commemorative medallion.
Special thanks go to our gracious and generous Korean hosts who on our days off took us sight seeing, bought us souvenirs and took us out for traditional Korean meals showing us wonderful Korean hospitality. Finally a special note must be made to remember the good friends we have made from Korea and many other nations. These people made our participation in the festival a very special and enriching experience.
